The Star Wars story Ahsoka will debut on Disney+ on August 22. Starring Rosario Dawson (Men in Black II, Sin City, Rent, Haunted Mansion, and the upcoming Marvel/Netflix shows), the eight-episode first season will center on the series’ protagonist as she reunites with old allies to investigate the reappearance of the evil Empire.
While most viewers will be introduced to Ahsoka’s cast for the first time, die-hard fans will be reunited with their favorite characters.
Several voice actors from the animated Star Wars series make cameo appearances in Ahsoka, including Natasha Liu Bordizzo as the blue-haired punk Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the coldly calculating general Hera Syndulla, and David Tennant as the sardonic lightsaber-maker droid Huyang.
Being unprepared for Ahsoka is understandable given the difficulty of navigating the Star Wars hub on Disney+, which seems to have been conjured by the Sith.
Don’t worry, little Padawan. Here at Men’s Health, we’ll lead you in the right direction by providing you with the most pertinent information about Ahsoka, her objective, and the historical period in the Star Wars canon in which her program is set. The whole picture is laid out below.
Have faith in us, and in the Force.
Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano was a teenage Togruta girl selected by the Jedi to be Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice during the Clone Wars, between the films Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005).
Ahsoka had ambition and promise as a would-be Jedi Master, but she could be naive and daring at the same time. She first appeared in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and one of the main focuses of the subsequent seven-season animated series of the same name was her development as Anakin’s pupil.
During the entirety of the Clone Wars, Ahsoka studied under Anakin. However, she became disillusioned with the Jedi Order after she was falsely accused of murder.
Ahsoka almost escaped death during the time of the Jedi’s betrayal and hunt by Order 66 and Anakin’s transformation into a Sith lord. She fled the Empire and rose to prominence as a secret spy for the uprising.
In the animated series Star Wars Rebels, which ran from 2014-2018 on DisneyXD, Ahsoka returned as an older, wiser, almost monk-like version of herself.
Rebels, which takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope (1977), features the return of Ahsoka, who helps the series’ protagonists, such as orphaned Force-user Ezra Bridger (voiced by Taylor Gray), expand their reach across the galaxy.
In Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Rosario Dawson made a guest appearance as Ahsoka, a role originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein. Based on the public interest in Ahsoka and the praise for Dawson’s portrayal of the character in The Mandalorian, the character has been given her own show, Ahsoka.
What, Then, Is Ahsoka’s Story About?
The events of Ahsoka occur decades before the beginning of The Force Awakens. The remnants of the Empire’s loyalists continue to operate in the shadows after the collapse of the once-mighty Empire. Ahsoka plays an important role here.
Thrawn, a notable Imperial Grand Admiral, has been missing for some time, and the reappearance of such a figure has the potential to galvanize Empire followers and spark conflict. The former Jedi has to deal with these rumors.
Ahsoka re-teams with some familiar faces from Star Wars Rebels since no one can stop the Empire and the Sith on their alone.
The Redemption of a Jedi
Some Star Wars fans were slow to warm up to Ahsoka Tano, which is perhaps not surprising. Her original, youthful persona was meant to appeal to a wide range of audiences, but it instead drew the ire of the community around the year 2008.
Fans complained about everything about Ahsoka and compared her to Jar Jar Binks if you dug through the archives of old message boards, blogs, and Reddit discussions from the time.
It should come as no surprise that Ahsoka’s actress, Ashley Eckstein, was the target of vicious internet harassment due to fan animosity.
Eckstein attributes her current work as an advocate for mental health and the co-founding of the nerdy women’s fashion line Her Universe to the horrific experience she had as a child.
Like any good fandom, Ahsoka’s image has been rehabilitated thanks to years of entertaining Star Wars cartoons, comics, and books.
Despite being absent from every live-action film in the franchise, she is now considered a fan favorite. There was a lot of talk about her arrival on The Mandalorian because of how influential she is. All of that positive buzz is being used to promote her show now.
How well-versed in Ahsoka should I be on the other Star Wars characters?
Since it features several other well-known characters from the Star Wars universe, Ahsoka might be seen as a canonical continuation of both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.
In addition to Ahsoka, one of the show’s main protagonists is Mandalorian Sabine, who studied under Ahsoka as a Jedi trainee until tensions between them arose. (Her rejection of Sabine is reminiscent of Anakin’s rejection of Ahsoka.)
Hera, a former pilot, rose through the ranks to become a renowned commander. Freddie Prinze Jr. played Jedi survivor Kanan Jarrus, who Hera fell in love with on Rebels.
They’re parents to a son whose unusual name is Jacen. Ezra Bridger, who went missing after the events of Rebels, is played by Eman Esfandi.
Huyang, a droid who has helped Ahsoka on her mission for thousands of years by creating lightsabers for the Jedi, is voiced once again by David Tennant, famed for shows like Doctor Who and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens. First seen in The Clone Wars, Tennant has performed the part before.
Like Ahsoka, the Imperial military chief Thrawn will make his first live-action TV appearance here. Fans of the right kind will feel a chill up their spines if you mention Thrawn’s name.
This is because Thrawn played a pivotal role in three novels published in the 1990s that helped to kick off the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
Heir to the Empire (1991), Dark Force Rising (1992), and The Last Command (1993), together known as the “Thrawn Trilogy,” were published at a time when there was no new Star Wars media to keep fans interested and the prequel films were still years away.
Lars Mikkelsen, who voiced Thrawn in the animated series Rebels, will play the part in the live-action film Ahsoka.
Where Should I Start Before Ahsoka?
It’s possible to enjoy Ahsoka without any prior knowledge, but doing so would be a huge missed opportunity.
Fortunately, the folks at Lucasfilm have anticipated your curiosity and made it quite simple. Presently, Disney+’s Star Wars hub features a carousel called “Ahsoka Tano Essential Episodes.”
It’s exactly what it sounds like: a listing of almost two dozen episodes, largely from Clone Wars and Rebels, in which Ahsoka plays a significant role. Ahsoka’s journey from young Padawan to exiled Jedi to rebel hero is chronicled here.
Ahsoka Milky Way
The Star Wars galaxy diverges from our Milky Way galaxy, the Skyriver galaxy, but a significant revelation in the second episode of the Ahsoka TV series introduces another galaxy named Peridia and a connecting pathway between the two galaxies.
This raises speculation about a potential link between the Star Wars galaxy and our Milky Way. Factors supporting this notion include the Eye of Sion, a hyperdrive machine capable of traversing to Peridia, and a map resembling the Milky Way galaxy’s map.
However, opposing evidence exists, such as differences in star count and planet arrangement compared to the Milky Way galaxy. The question remains unanswered about whether the Star Wars galaxy is our Milky Way galaxy.
The future holds the answer to whether Ahsoka and her companions will venture into our galaxy, marking a significant crossover and reshaping the Star Wars universe landscape.
